Nearly 700,000 women to take part in trial of AI breast cancer screening

BBC News

Currently, two radiologists are required to review the images from each screening to ensure accuracy. However, it is hoped the AI being trialled will enable one of the speciality doctors to complete the process, freeing up radiologists to see more patients and, in turn, cut waiting lists. More than two million mammograms a year are carried out under the screening programme, so it could have a major impact on the workload of radiologists. Department of Health and Social Care chief scientific adviser Prof Lucy Chappell said the study could lead to a "significant step forward". Health Secretary Wes Streeting said this should just be the start of a wider improvement in cancer care.

TopSpin 2K25 review – game, set and match to an engrossing tennis sim

The Guardian

Tennis is one of those sports that has only been intermittently well served by video games. The odd major series comes along, such as Pete Sampras, Virtua Tennis or Smash Court, but often we're left relying on old favourites (take a bow, Super Tennis). It's been 13 years since TopSpin 4 was released, and that title is considered such an authentic simulation of the sport that people are still seeking out copies to this day. But perhaps no longer: 2K Games has at last produced a follow-up, and it's a true championship contender. From the opening, TopSpin 2K25 has all the detail you'd expect from a modern licensed sports sim. All the key stadiums and championships are here – though the play environments are only adequately detailed, rather than the stunning theatres of photorealism we've come to expect from EA Sports.

Meet the football playing robot that's 'better than Messi'

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A football playing robot is to compete in an international tournament later this year - and experts say'she' is better than Lionel Messi. The 4ft 8in humanoid, named Artemis, can walk and jump, and is among the only three robots across the globe with the ability to run. Researchers from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) refer to Artemis as an anagram for'A Robot That Exceeds Messi In Soccer'. Dennis Hong, director at the Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory said: 'We're very excited to take Artemis out for field testing here at UCLA and we see this as an opportunity to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics to a much wider audience.' The human-sized robot will show off its football skills as a contender at France's RoboCup23 in July.

AI trial for bowel cancer care underway at 9 NHS trusts

#artificialintelligence

The first UK clinical trial of an artificial intelligence (AI) device which has the potential to transform bowel cancer care is underway at nine NHS trusts. The COLO-DETECT study is trialing the use of GI Genius, an AI device which helps clinicians identify polyps during colonoscopies. Five hundred patients have already been recruited to take part in the trial at one of nine participating trusts. The AI device is capable of highlighting area that it thinks may contain a polyp – from which most bowel cancers develop. Spotting as many polyps as possible allows the area to be more closely examined to determine if polyps are present and if they need to be removed.
